The Best Overall
Philips

Philips HF3520/60 SmartSleep Wake Up Light Video Review
What We Think of the Philips HF3520/60 SmartSleep Wake Up Light
The Philips SmartSleep wake up light is one of the most effective on the market with 20 brightness settings for an effect sunrise simulation. This many brightness levels ensures that there isn’t a huge difference between one setting and the next, so it can authentically replicate a natural sunrise with gradual brightening.
There are 5 nature sounds to choose from when deciding which tone you’d like to go off at the time of your alarm. If you’re not ready to get up right away, the tap snooze function will give you another 9 minutes before sounding again. The light will begin at its dimmest setting exactly 30 minutes before your alarm is set to go off, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the steadily growing brightness before waking up. Unfortunately, the duration is not adjustable with this model.
Since I have blackout curtains in my bedroom, this light works very well to wake me up gently. I really liked that I could personalize how bright the light goes as it wakes you up and I enjoy that I could select how long it takes to wake me up. To snooze, all you have to do is tap, which is great since you don’t need to open your eyes to find a button. It’s exactly what I wanted.
Alissa G.
For a more authentic sunruse simulation, the light will transition between three colours to more accurately depict a natural rising sun with reds, oranges, and yellows to make it more effective on dark mornings. This wake up light also has FM radio connectivity so you can listen to the radio instead of a nature sound if you prefer. The light uses LED light instead of UV and has non-slip feet so you won’t accidentally knock it over when snoozing or shutting the unit off.

What We Think of the Philips HF3650/60 SmartSleep RelaxBreathe Wake Up Light
The Philips SmartSleep RelaxBreathe wake up light is a more advanced version of our top pick. It offers more variety and enhanced sunrise and sunset technologies to be more even more useful. This light has 4 light colours instead of 3: red, orange, yellow, and white. 25 brightness settings make this light even more authentic since we have smaller changes between each light setting with a brighter end result to help you wake up.
You’ll have 7 relaxing nature sounds to choose from for your morning alarm, and it will start low and gradually get louder once your alarm goes off to wake you up more gently than all other alarm clocks you’ve had in the past. Plus, the duration of your morning sunrise is adjustable between 20 and 40 minutes so you can customize your experience.
This light is amazing. I’m usually a zombie in the morning but I feel much better waking up to the light, though I usually watch it brighten for 10 minutes since I wake up before my alarm every morning. Since I’m a regular snooze pusher, I set the light to the brightest setting to really wake me up. The wind down program really helps me get to sleep too.
Stephanie R.
If you’re not ready to get up right away, the snooze function can be initiated with a single tap on the light for an extra 9 minutes of relaxation. This model also comes with an 8-hour backup in case of a power outage so your alarm will still go off in the morning no matter what. The Affordable Choice
AK1980
We all need a little help getting up in the morning, and doing so when it’s pitch-black outside is even more difficult than usual. AK1980 6639 Wake Up Light Alarm Clock Video Review
What We Think of the AK1980 6639 Wake Up Light Alarm Clock
The AK1980 alarm clock with built-in wake up light is an affordable option for people who need a little help getting up in the morning but don’t want to spend too much. 30 minutes before your alarm is set to go off, the light will begin at its lowest setting and increase by 10 brightness levels for a simulated sunrise. Since there are fewer brightness levels than many others, you will notice larger differences between each level for a less gradual experience.
The clock face is large and easy to read with simple one-touch controls on the display screen. There are 6 sounds to choose from as your alarm tone so you can avoid the normal beeping in favour of a soothing nature sound like water or birds. Or, if you’re in the mood for something less repetitive, you can set your alarm to play an FM radio station instead for music in the morning.
I’m a dad of 3 and value anything that useful and affordable. You can wake up to the FM radio instead of one of the nature sounds which I enjoy. 30 minutes before your alarm is set to go off, the light turns on at a 1 and gradually increases to its full brightness like the rising sun. You can only use the white light for the alarm but the other colours make great mood lights or night lights for kids. This is a great light for a great price.
George Y.
7 colours of light offer a great variety for mood lighting or night lights for children’s rooms. A 5-minute snooze function will give you enough time to catch a few extra ZZZs while ensuring you won’t be late for work or school. The sunrise duration is 30 minutes. For total darkness during the night, you can lower the brightness of the display since it has two brightness settings for night and day viewing.

Presentation of the Philips HF3505/60 SmartSleep Wake Up Light
The No Frills Alternative
Philips
The Philips HF3505/60 SmartSleep wake up light is the basic version offered by Philips. It has fewer options and adjustments compared to their other models, and is more affordable because of it. This light is a good choice for those seeking basic functionality without frills and complicated settings.
Philips HF3505/60 SmartSleep Wake Up Light Video Review
What We Think of the Philips HF3505/60 SmartSleep Wake Up Light
The Philips SmartSleep wake up light is one of the lower-end Philips options with fewer features and variety, but it is the same high-quality light we’ve come to expect of the Philips SmartSleep line. This light only has 3 sounds to choose from, so you may end up preferring the FM radio for music in the morning over one of the three other options.
The light can be used as a reading light with 10 light settings to choose from. These ten settings are also used in your sunrise simulation, so it will seem less gradual compared to a light with 20 or more brightness settings. This light only offers one colour for your sunrise/reading light as well: white. You also can’t use this light to fall asleep or as a night light since it does not offer a night light function or any other sunset/sleep settings.
Overall, this is an okay light. You pay a premium for Philips products but I don’t find that it is any better than the significantly cheaper option I used before. I will say it is easy to use and works well for waking me up slowly on dark winter mornings, but the lack of sound options and a battery backup are close to deal breakers for me since these are basic features I expect for the price.
Lisa C.
The snooze is easy to sue with a single tap on the light so you can get an extra 9 minutes of rest without having to open your eyes and look for a specific button. Despite the fewer features and disappointing variety, this is a high-quality light that is durable and reliable for years. Though maybe not worth the price for the lack of features, it is worth it if you prefer longevity over variety in your alarm clock.

Philips HF3505/60 SmartSleep Wake Up Light Pros and Cons

Overall, the Philips SmartSleep wake up light is an expensive option for limited functionality. Though cheaper than many other Philips wake up lights and with the same reliable quality, it doesn’t offer enough customizations or features to warrant its price. There are numerous other options that offer more for less if you’re not set on the Philips brand.
Presentation of the Winshine A200 Touch Wake Up Night Light
The Soothing Alternative
Winshine
Many wake up lights don’t have the functionality to suit lighter sleepers or children who have less demanding wake up needs. For a product that offers all of the features you need for a soothing wake up and nighttime routine, choose the Winshine A200 touch wake up night light.
What We Think of the Winshine A200 Touch Wake Up Night Light
This Winshine wake up light has all the features we look for in a top quality model. It is perfectly designed to provide a more soothing wake up experience than some others. The 6 light colors can be used independently as a constant, or you can make use of the color-changing mode in order to bring a more engaging atmosphere into your room. Since this model can also be used as a night light, you can take advantage of the colors anytime you wish.
The wake up duration is set at 30 minutes, but you have sounds to select from as an alarm tone. The snooze will last for 5 minutes, which is shorter than many other models, but may suit your preferences better. The white light setting is dimmable to three levels, so you can have a softer wake up experience if you wish to. This will be easier on the eyes and help you wake up more gradually.
I think my only issue with this wake up light is that the snooze is only for 5 minutes; I prefer a 10 min snooze, so I just have to snooze twice, which is a bit disruptive. Otherwise, though, I really like this product. The volume and brightness are adjustable, and you still have a bunch of sounds and colors to choose for a great experience. I use it as a night light sometimes, but also as a sunrise simulator.
jack z.
The sunrise and sunset simulation will help kids and adults alike fall asleep and wake up more gradually. As customizable wake up lights go, you will not find a model more customizable than this Jall ACA-002-B light. In addition to the 7 sounds, there are also 7 light colors that you have the freedom to select and change as you wish. Things to Know Before Buying a Wake Up Light
Benefits of Using a Wake Up Light
A wake up light makes it much easier to wake up in the morning. Beyond that, there are a few other benefits to consider:
- A wake up light is beneficial in the winter since it supports morning cortisol response to assist your circadian rhythm and reduce stress. Higher morning cortisol will make you feel more refreshed and awake to face the day
- Wake up lights balance melatonin – a light-responsive hormone that helps you fall asleep at night. Balanced melatonin is lowest in the morning and highest at night, and a wake up light simulating sunshine will keep melatonin from becoming unbalanced when you wake up in the dark
- Light therapy has long been used for depression and seasonal affective disorder, and a wake up light can also help with these struggles since you wake up to light in the winter the same way you do in summer
- Wake up lights wake you gently with softer sounds and a gradual light adjustment. This slower wake up period is better for your health and your mood since you won’t be shocked awake by a loud alarm
- A wake up light helps you feel more refreshed and rested in the morning since it is slower than a normal alarm, improving your mood, focus, and motivation for the entire day
How to Properly Choose Your Wake Up Light
- Price.
For an alarm clock, wake up lights may seem a bit pricier than you expect. However, they offer incredible value to your life that make them worth it. Of course, there is a wide range of prices for wake up lights with options for every budget. To find the right wake up light more easily, set your budget first and then narrow your choices based on price.
- Brightness Settings.
The brightness settings are one of the most important features on a wake up light. The more there are, the better the light will simulate a gradual sunrise. We recommend choosing a light with more than 10 brightness settings so that it can adjust gradually before you wake up. Less than 5 is poor since it isn’t enough for gradual light in your room.
- Colours.
The light colours on your wake up light are a bit of a luxury. Though the effect will still work with a normal yellow or white light slowly getting brighter, a greater colour range is best for authentic sunrises. A red, orange, and yellow colour change is best, but some lamps have other colours like purple, green, and blue that can be used as mood lighting or a night light for children.
- Sounds.
As with any alarm, you’ll want variety when choosing which sound goes off to pull you from your slumber. Most of us actively hate our alarms since the sounds are often ear piercing and incredibly annoying, but a wake up light is different. They almost always offer 5 or more nature sounds to choose from so you can wake up to soothe birdsong or peaceful ocean waves rather than an incessant beeping.
- FM Radio.
For those who prefer variety in the morning, you can choose to have your wake up light wake you up to the FM radio. This feature is super easy to use and will let you wake up to music on the radio rather than a repetitive sound on the machine.
- Control Settings.
On many wake up lights, you can control your settings with one-touch buttons on the base of the unit. On others with more advanced features, you can actually control oyur light through a mobile app or Alexa. It’s up to you which you prefer, but make sure you consider which would be more convenient for you before purchasing a light.
- Snooze Function.
A snooze function is an essential feature on any alarm clock, and a wake up light is no different. Most lights have a snooze function that can be used between one and five times in the morning, with ranges of 5-15 minutes for your snooze.
For optimal convenience, a snooze function that taps to start is best so you don’t have to open your eyes and fumble for the button.
- Automatic Dimming.
Many wake up lights are also useful at night. An automatic dimming feature will begin to gradually the light in your room to simulate a sunset and help your body prepare for sleep so you can fall asleep faster and more easily. Not all wake up lights will be nighttime compatible, so look for this feature for help falling asleep as well.
- Relaxation Sounds.
Along with the sounds your wake up light uses to wake you up in the morning, they often have a few other sounds available that can be left one, such as white noise or a nature sound.
This feature is good to have in a child’s room to help them sleep more soundly, but it can also be used as white noise for adults to block out noises that can disturb your sleep. They can also be used to help you focus on work or school or for normal background noise.
- Wake-Up Duration.
The wake-up duration of your wake up light refers to how quickly the light grows from dim to bright. An adjustable duration is best so you can customize how long it takes for the light to change. Some lights have a 10-minute duration to a 60-minute duration, while others can’t be customized at all. If it’s important to you that you can adjust this feature, make sure you know how the duration can be changed.
- Warranty.
As always, a warranty on a product is the best way to ensure you’re receiving a quality product and protection for your purchase. Some lights have warranties of only 90 days while others are 2 years. While not the end-all-be-all of your purchase decision, a short warranty speaks to lower quality products and should be considered carefully.
We do our best to provide you with a comparative guide of wake up lights allowing you to choose the best product possible. If we are missing information or new models, do not hesitate to leave a comment below or to send us a message.
