A safe bet would be two cups of coffee per day, but 3-4 won’t hurt you when using most types of Nespresso machines if you need an extra boost of caffeine.
How to Properly Choose Your Nespresso Machine
1. Price
Nespresso capsules can be expensive, so the initial price of the Nespresso machine you choose shouldn’t be too much of a concern when shopping. Since the range between machines doesn’t vary by much more than $100 on our list, it is safe to assume that your budget should be about that wide to provide the quality, versatility, and overall value you may be looking for. When budgeting for a Nespresso machine, make sure you price out the cost of the pods you’ll be purchasing (some only take Nespresso capsules, others may take pods like Keurig K-cups) to ensure Nespresso is affordable for you.
2. Water Tank Capacity.
Though the water tank capacity isn’t a major feature to look at, it can affect the convenience of your morning coffee making. Most Nespresso machines can hold less than a litre of water, but there are a handful of models that offer more space for more than a litre. You’ll probably want to use fresh water for your coffee anyway, but a larger capacity is more convenient when making larger brew sizes since you won’t have to refill during the process or directly after a brew.
3. Cup Size Options.
The variety of cup size options offered by the Nespresso machine you choose is one of the most important features. Most offer two sizes, one for espresso and one for Lungo coffee, but some may offer 5 or six options if they’re designed for more than single-serve brews. If you’ll want to use your Nespresso machine when you have guests or for a larger coffee-drinking household, more cup sizes will be useful so that everyone has the amount of caffeine they desire without needing to make multiple cups.
4. Size
The overall size of the Nespresso machine you choose is important since it will most likely be sitting out on your counter all the time. Most Nespresso coffee machines are designed to be tall, long, and slim to fit better on your counter. Usually, they won’t be more than 6” wide and about 12-13 inches tall. While the height most likely means you won’t be able to put in a new capsule if the Nespresso machine sits under your cupboards, this can’t be avoided. If you’re looking for a compact machine, we recommend a width of no more than 5” for a better fit.
5. Smart Features.
On many Nespresso machines, there are some intelligent features that can make your morning more convenient. The most popular feature is the automatic brew barcode scanning function on the Vertuo and Vertuo Next. Many Nespresso machines will also have automatic capsule storage for used capsules so you can toss them in the trash in bulk rather than make a mess replacing them manually after each cup. Some machines may even have indicators when your water tank needs to be filled, particularly if the tank is on the inside of the machine rather than on the outside where it could be seen.
6. Automatic Shutoff.
An automatic shutoff on Nespresso machines is fairly standard, but the time may vary from machine to machine. The most common time frame for an automatic shutoff to save energy is 9 minutes (don’t ask us why), but some may be 30 minutes or even programmable so you can choose the amount of time the appliance waits before shutting off after no activity.
7. Power.
The power output of a Nespresso machine directly affects how quickly it will reach its brewing temperature. Most models have 1200 or 1300 watts of power for heating and brewing, but some may be as low as 1000. Naturally, the more power the machine has, the faster it will heat, but usually, there will only be a difference of 5-10 seconds between machines.
