This is certainly not the model you want when searching for lost keys in tall grass. You’ll simply never find them. The other feature missing from this model is headphone compatibility, so you won’t be able to quiet the alerts.

The overall design of this machine is pretty great. The pole length is adjustable from 24” to 39”, making it a wonderful choice for both kids and adults. It weighs only 1.4 lbs too, so it will be comfortable even during long term use.

The coil on this model is 7.5” in diameter, and it is fully waterproof to let you enjoy some underwater treasure hunting as well.

How to Properly Choose Your Metal Detector

1. Price.

Metal detectors can vary quite a bit in price, and for the most part, the price tag will be accurately indicative of the quality. The cheapest models can be found between $70 and $100.

These are kids models and the simplest versions of adult models out there. They will be fairly limited in features and performance.

The higher end models will be priced as high as $250 roughly, but they are the most powerful and versatile models out there. They will almost always be worth the extra money.

2. Weight.

All metal detectors will only weigh a few pounds, it’s nearly impossible to find one that weighs more than five. The lighter they are, the more comfortable they will be for long term use.

3. Detection Modes.

Almost all metal detectors will have at least two detection modes. There is an all metal option, and then a discrimination mode that will eliminate certain metals from detection.

Some metal detectors will even have modes for hunting coins, jewellery, and other valuables specifically. In general, the more detection modes a product has, the more it will cost.

4. Search Coil Size.

The search coil size is directly related to the depth it can search. The larger the coil size, the more powerful it is and the deeper it can detect metals.

A larger coil size can also cover more land area at once, and this can be valuable for large search areas. Again, the larger the coil size, the more expensive the metal detector.

5. Adjustable Length.

Every metal detector will have a rod that is adjustable. This allows people of all heights to make use of it comfortable.

Some have longer extension capabilities than others, so it is a good idea to verify the specs if you are unusually tall or short for an adult.

If you have children that will be using the metal detector as well, you’ll need to check that it can be shortened enough for their use as well.

6. Detection Depth.

The detection depth is related to coil size, and the range is between 5” and 12” for small objects. Some metal detectors can detect larger objects several metres deep, and others will be limited to the small object depth.

For most, a six inch detection depth will be adequate, but for more thorough detection, 10” or 12” is ideal. Since more power is required to search deeper into the ground, these models will be more expensive.

7. Waterproof Coil for Underwater Detection.

Nearly every metal detector will have at least a waterproof coil, and others will be waterproof up to the rod, or even the entire unit in special circumstances.
