The Best Masticating Juicers in Canada in 2021 – Reviews and Buying Guide

by Véronique Raymond

Juicing has become a popular trend for liquid diets, juice cleanses, and for a morning boost. Eating more fruits and vegetables is great for your health, but drinking them might make it a bit easier to get all of those daily servings included in your diet. An increased intake of fruit and vegetables is linked to improved energy, clearer skin, mental clarity, improved digestion and gut health, and an overall healthier feeling – just be careful not to believe everything you hear about juice cleanses and liquid diets since a liquid form of your fruits and vegetables will not have greater health benefits than eating these foods like normal.

To find the best juicers in 2020, we considered ease of use, value, cleaning difficulty, ease of assembly and disassembly, durability, prep requirements, juice yield, versatility, and overall quality. With these factors at the forefront of our mind, we looked at 23 different products and reviewed 796 customer ratings and reviews over 31 hours to find the best contenders in a variety of categories including power, value, nutrient content, and convenience.

Following our last update, we recommend the Homever Low Speed Masticating Juicer and the Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain Plus as our top picks for horizontal and vertical juicers, respectively. These units score the highest across the board and impress us for their versatility, quality, and ease of use.

Homever Low Speed Masticating Juicer Video Review

What We Think of the Homever Low Speed Masticating Juicer

The Homever juicer is a masticating juicer, meaning it uses a spiral auger to extract the juice from produce. Since it is a low speed juicer, it protects a greater percentage of the vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that make fruit and vegetables so healthy. Masticating juicers are known for better juice extraction and this unit can extract up to 90% of the juice in all of your produce to make more juice per use.

This juicer is easy to assemble and disassemble to make cleaning less of a pain, and the parts are all BPA free. It also has a second juicer cup to create a purer juice by catching the smaller pulp. The filter on this juicer is incredibly fine to provide better texture and purer juice. Homever includes a reverse function so that you can easily fix clogs and jams when they happen.

This juicer is exactly as described. It works virtually silently since it is a slower, lower power juicer. It divides the juice and pulp perfectly with all kinds of fruits and veggies like kale, carrots, cherries, and apples. It is very easy to take apart and put together for cleaning. The pulp is always very dry coming out so we know we’re getting the most juice out of our food as possible.

Harry T.

There is a security lock on the unit to prevent the unit from operating in unsafe conditions and the machine comes with a handy cleaning brush for scrubbing the filter. This juicer has a small pulp bin and equally small juice container, so you’ll have to continually dump both into either the garbage or a larger juice container, respectively. This juicer also requires a bit of prep work on larger fruits and veggies before they will fit through the less then 2” feed chute.

Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain Plus Video Review

What We Think of the Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain Plus

The Breville juice fountain is a centrifugal juicer with a 1L juice jug included so you know exactly how much juice your fruit is producing. The juice jug is equipped with a froth separator to ensure your juice comes out clean and pure. The juicer can operate with the lid on the juice jug so you don’t have any messes to clean up from splashed as the juice enters the jug.

This unit has two speeds, one for softer fruits and one for harder produce for the best efficiency and customized rpms based on the type of produce you’re juicing. The intake chute is a larger diameter of 3” which enables faster juicing without so much prep work beforehand. Juicing is done using discs and a micromesh filter that captures the smallest pulp for purer, fresher tasting juice.

This machine is very safe to use and won’t run if something is out of place. The puree disc for softer fruits keeps the pulp and juice separate better than other juicers I’ve tried. Switching between discs is quick and easy and the wide chute enables faster juicing with less prep. I like that it came with its own pitcher as well.

Rick G.

All parts on this juicer are dishwasher safe to make cleanup after an intense juicing session easier and faster. This machine is equipped with a safety locking arm that ensures your juicer operates safely since it won’t let you use it until the cover is locked in place. The only flaw to note with this juicer is that it is incredibly loud at the higher speed, though this is not a deal breaker given the user-friendly features and larger bins for larger quantities.

Tribest GSE-5000 Green Star Elite Jumbo Juicer Video Review

What We Think of the Tribest GSE-5000 Green Star Elite Jumbo Juicer

The Tribest Green star juicer is a large unit capable of much more than simple juicing. It comes with accessories that help it perform as a food mill to prepare sorbet, nut butter, baby food, and more. it both extracts juice from fruits and vegetables and grinds grains and nuts for advanced versatility and a variety of uses. The accessories included with this juicer include a fine and coarse screen for pulp filtering, a homogenizing blank for food processing, a breadstick maker, wooden plunger, plastic plunger, cleaning brush, and glass juice pitcher.

This juicer has a manual pressure adjuster that allows you to adjust the pressure being applied to your produce, nuts, and grains and can be used during the juicing process at any time. The automatic pulp ejection makes for faster, continuous juicing that speeds up the process, which is useful since the smaller intake chute requires more upfront prep for wider foods.

This juicer is probably the best on the market for extracting the most juice possible out of your produce. I was very impressed with how dry the pulp is and how well it juices your leafy greens. It does take up a bit of room on your countertop but it’s worth it for lots of juice. I usually throw my parts in the dishwasher to clean with less effort.

Barry K.

The dual augers and magnetic and bioceramic technology produce better juice with a higher nutritional content since it saves more of what’s in your food rather than sacrificing minerals and vitamins through the juicing process. This unit is larger and will take up more room on your counter, and is consequently harder to store as well. The price of this juicer may turn off some people, but those who can afford a higher-quality juicer won’t have any complaints about this Tribest model.

Hamilton Beach 67601A Juice Extractor Video Review

What We Think of the Hamilton Beach 67601A Juice Extractor

This affordable plastic Hamilton Beach juicer is designed with the consumer in mind, boasting several features that make it exceed our expectations for ease of use. The pulp bin is extra large so you can make as much juice as you want without having to stop and empty a full bin. The unit doesn’t come with a juice jug, but the high spout position lets you use any container you have handy in your kitchen.

The intake chute is a large 3” so you don’t have to much or any prep at all before getting down to juicing. The 800watts of power is an impressive amount for this lower-end machine, and it can handle harder fruits and vegetables with ease thanks to the coupling of the powerful motor and stainless-steel cutter. The stainless-steel strainer is fine to create purer juice and can be cleaned in the dishwasher along with the pulp bin and other removable parts.

I’ve used this juicer every day for two weeks and I couldn’t be happier with it. it seems to get quite a bit of juice out, though probably not as much as the juicers for a few hundred dollars. for my needs, it makes enough juice and the large pulp bin lets me do all sorts of produce without having to pause and empty it at all. It’s pretty loud but you’re only using it a few minutes at a time so it’s okay.

Allie F.

The juicer only has one speed but it is strong enough to handle harder produce but is gentle on softer fruits to retain maximum nutrients while juicing. One flaw of the unit, which is fairly common with centrifugal juicers, is the loud operating noise that may quickly become an annoyance to some users. All parts are plastic so this model doesn’t have as long of a life expectancy as steel or polymer bodies, but should be all a beginner juicer needs even when used daily.

Ventray 808-Black Slow-Press Masticating Juicer Video Review

What We Think of the Ventray 808-Black Slow-Press Masticating Juicer

The Ventray juicer is a masticating juicer that uses a slow speed to retain as many nutrients as possible while juicing your fruits and vegetables. Using only 60 rpms, this juicer prevents oxidation and produces healthier, better tasting juice. This is another vertical juicer that stores the pulp above ground level to save counter space, making it a great choice for smaller or cluttered kitchens in need of a powerful juicer.

The mastication process produces more juice for your produce than most centrifugal juicers and has a high spout position and comes with two large juice pitchers for batch juicing. This juicer operates with one-touch controls for simplicity’s sake, saving you from complicated controls and confusing steps. The unit also comes with a cleaning brush and a rotating wiper around the fine strainer to prevent any clogs and jams.

I am very glad I switched from centrifugal to masticating when I upgraded from my last juicer. Assembly is easy so you won’t hate having to take it apart to clean. So far, we’ve used it for carrots, celery, apples, ginger, pineapples, and leafy greens. This produces an awesome amount of juice as well compared to our last centrifugal juicer.

Marley O.

The feed chute on this juicer is 3” so you don’t have to waste time with tedious prep work just to fit your produce in the juicer. The pusher fits snuggly inside the chute to push your produce as close to the auger as is possible for optimal juice extraction. A reverse function helps unclog jams when they occur by spinning the auger the opposite direction, saving you from having to take the unit apart to fix the jam.

Tribest SW-2000-B Slowstar Juicer Video Review

What We Think of the Tribest SW-2000-B Slowstar Juicer

The Tribest juicer is a high-end masticating juicer that uses slower speeds to maximize the nutrients in your juice. This fancier juicer uses a duo blade, double-edged ultem auger to extract 90% of the juice in your produce, giving you a better bang for your buck every time you juice. Your produce goes through 3 stages through reduction gears for maximum efficiency out of its 200-watt high-torque motor.

This juicer has a mincing attachment that expand its capabilities to include sorbets, nut butters, salsa, chutney, pesto, pates, and baby food for greater versatility in a single machine. the design of this machine reduces the risk of jamming to nearly zero with double the torque of your average slow-speed juicer. The high-quality materials inside the juicer produce more juice with less pulp and have a longer life expectancy than the usual plastic juicers.

I’ve had this Tribest juicer for about two months now and I love it! My last one was a centrifugal juicer and it’s amazing the difference between the two juice yields from each machine. clean up is simple and fast which is important since we use it every day. I enjoy that it is smaller in size, though I still have to take the base off to put it in the cupboard. All in all, a very good juicer.

Tracy U.

This juicer is equipped with a high spout that has a cap to prevent any leaks and drips from the spout when changing out containers or pitchers to continue juicing. It easily pops on and off and is easy to clean. The mastication process makes for quieter operation and greater efficiency to get through your pike of produce faster than other lower-end juicers. To take advantage of these benefits, you will have to pay significantly more for this model. One flaw to note as well is the narrower feed chute requiring more prep work.

CalmDo Slow Masticating Juicer Video Review

What We Think of the CalmDo Slow Masticating Juicer

The CalmDo Slow Masticating Juicer allows you to retain more nutrients from your produce due to its slow mastication speed. A 70RPM machine ensures that the mastication process does not degrade the nutritional quality of the juice it produces. While this juicer is obviously designed for making great juice, it can also be used to make smoothies, ice cream, baby food, and even butter.

This juicer is quite unique in its design. A powerful 140W motor operates at only 60 dB, likely making it the quietest appliance on your countertop. This juicer has a compact design that will improve the aesthetic of your kitchen rather than downgrade it. Most notably, the CalmDo juicer has 4 anti-slip suction cups attached to its bottom. These prevent the juicer from sliding around on your countertop if its accidentally bumped. After all, no one wants a juice spill dampening their day (or their clothes).

This juicer is amazing. This is the second juicer I’ve purchased, and it far exceeds my expectations. This CalmDo juicer produces so much more juice out of the same amount of produce as my last one, and I’ve noticed the pulp coming out is much drier. This machine is super quiet too, I almost forget it’s running if I’m not watching it. I would highly recommend this juicer; it works great and hardly ever gets clogged!

Alexis C.

This juicer is unique in that it has a one touch reverse function, allowing you to unclog any jammed pulp or produce in the machine easily and without physical exertion on your part. This masticating juicer also comes with two filter screens, allowing you to get the best results whether you are making juice or ice cream.

Things to Know Before Buying a Juicer

How Does a Juicer Work?

A juicer uses a motor to either grind, crush, crush, or squeeze the juice out of your produce. It automatically separates the juice from the pulp. Most juicers are automatic and electric, but you can buy a manual juicer known as a reamer for your citrus fruits like lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits. The most common types of electric juicers are centrifugal, which cuts the produce before spinning it at a high speed to separate the juice and pulp, and a masticating juicer, which uses an auger to crush and squeeze the juice out of your fruits and vegetables. A triturating juicer is similar to a masticating juicer but uses twin gears and augers rather a single auger.

What are The Benefits of Using a Juicer?

There are virtually countless benefits to using a juicer if you include all of the health benefits from increased fruit and veggie intake in your diet, but we’ll only list the biggest overall benefits so you’re not reading for the next 2.5 days.

Many people believe that consuming your fruit and vegetable servings in juice form allows your body to absorb the nutrients better, and drinking rather than eating your produce gives your digestive system a break from digesting fibre. Whether through the juicing process itself or an increased serving of important nutrients, antioxidants, and minerals in your produce, using a juicer will boost your immune system, help flush out toxins from your body, aid digestion, and help you lose weight.

Of course, the type of produce you use and the frequency you consume fruit and vegetable juices will have different effects on your health and wellbeing. Popular juicing cleansing and liquid diets can actually be harmful for your general health, so make sure to do your research and always juice in moderation.

What Can I Use My Juicer For?

Your juicer can be used for nearly any fruit and vegetable including leafy greens, berries, apples, pears, carrots, coconut, beets, cucumbers, herbs, grapes, melons, pineapple, kiwi, citrus fruits, and more.

Your juicer can also make almond milk, tomato sauce, sorbet, hummus, cocktails, salsa, nut butter, dole whip, soups, and more.

A dual auger masticating juicer also usually comes with accessories for making breadsticks, rice cakes, pasta, pate, and more.

How to Properly Choose Your Juicer

  • Price.

Of course, your budget will have a big impact on the type and quality of juicer you purchase. Higher-end juicers typically have a better juice extraction then lower end juicers, but the type of technology used will also influence your juice output, so you may be able to find an inexpensive masticating juicer that gives more juice than a more expensive centrifugal juicer. Moral of the story; don’t judge on price alone when choosing a juicer.

  • Juicing Technology.

Juicers either use a mastication process or centrifugal force to extract the juice from your fruits and veggies. Masticating juicers usually have a higher rating for juice extraction than centrifugal juicers, but that’s not to say that a centrifugal juicer cannot get your adequate juice. Aside from functionality, mastication juicers are typically quieter than centrifugal juicers, which might be an important factor for some people to consider when deciding between the two.

  • Speed/Pressure Settings.

The seed and pressure settings on your juicer is typically low speed or normal speed. Low speed juicers are known to produce a higher nutrient content in the juice since they protect the enzymes in your produce, but some regular juicers may also have adjustable pressure or dual speeds depending on the hardness of the produce you’re sending through the machine. there are arguments in favour of all types of juicers, so this element really comes down to personal preference for time and noise – a higher speed will get through harder fruits faster but will also be much noisier.

  • Wattage.

The wattage of your juicer matters because a stronger motor will more easily juice harder foods such as carrots and coconut. However, a higher-powered juicer may be more expensive or much noisier than a low-powered juicer, and may even reduce the nutrient content in your produce if juicing too fast.

  • Pulp Bin.

If you’re juicing one serving at a time just for yourself, the size of the pulp bin may be of less concern, but a larger bin is usually sought after so you don’t have to continually dump it out during the juicing process. The location of the pulp bin is also important if you have small counters. Most pulp bins are on the side of the unit, but some will be included in the vertical structure to save on counter space or storage space and might be more appealing to some.

  • Warranty.

The warranty of your juice maker can last for one year or over a decade depending on the brand and quality of the machine. Most long-term (5+ years) warranties only apply to the motor rather than the entire machine, but it is still worth registering for on the more expensive units since parts can usually be requested from the company or purchased when they need replacing, but the motor is the heart of the juicer.

  • Chute Width.

Chute/intake mouth sizes vary from one or two inches to a larger 3-inch diameter. Most people prefer the larger openings since they limit the amount of prep work you need to do to make your juice. The 3” chute can take most apples and pears whole so you don’t have to do near as much chopping and slicing like you would with a 1-2” diameter chute. If you don’t plan on using too many round fruits, you’ll most likely be happy with a smaller width.

  • Accessories.

Juicers typically come with a cleaning brush since the filter and mechanisms need to be cleaned after every use, but some juicers also have their own juice jug built for the height of the spout and to complement the pulp bin size so you don’t have your own container. Most of the juice jugs are also labelled similar to a measuring cup so you always know how much juice you’ve produced.
