Trays can also be adjusted on a horizontal level to accommodate larger bodies as children grow, and even 2 or 3 options give plenty of space for growing bodies.

4. Recline Options.

Many high chairs are designed with reclinable seats for infants. If you struggle to hold your baby while bottle feeding, a reclinable high chair can make the task much easier by fully supporting your baby at an ergonomic and comfortable position for feeding. Multiple recline options are ideal so you can adjust the chair as your baby grows.

5. Safety Harness.

There are two options for safety harnesses on high chairs: 3-point and 5-point. A 5-point harness is the safest option since it has over-the-shoulder straps that keep your child immobilized in their seat. 3-point harnesses are more common in high chairs that are designed for older babies, but they aren’t as safe since your child can stand up and get out of the high chair since the straps only go over the legs. We recommend choosing a 5-point safety harness since it is the safest option, but 3-point harnesses are fine if you’ll be seated with your child every second.

6. Portability.

If you bring your children to Grandma’s house often or enjoy taking the kids on camping or beach trips, a portable high chair is a must. Since they are often less supportive and not as comfortable, many parents choose to have a secondary high chair with a focus on portability for taking with them. However, many high-end high chairs have the ability to fold up, so they can be equally portable as long as they aren’t too heavy. A high chair that has 4 wheels is more portable indoors if you want to wheel it between rooms, but it is also less stable if they don’t lock effectively.

7. Versatility.

Modern high chairs are incredibly versatile pieces of equipment, often taking the shape of 3 or 4 different types of seats for your baby. The most common options are full-size high chairs, booster seats, and toddler seats, but some high chairs may also convert to a table and chair or be able to seat two kids at once between the booster and toddler seats. If you have multiple children or want a high chair that can grow with your kids, multiple chair modes are important but most likely won’t cost too much extra as it is becoming more standard.

8. Ease of Cleaning.

Kids are incredibly messy eaters, so parents should make sure to choose a high chair that cleans easily. Even fabric covered high chairs are usually easy to clean simply by wiping them down with a damp cloth, but removable covers are preferred since they can be machine washed to remove stains without too much effort. All high chairs will have nooks and crannies, but a cover helps keep the mess to a minimum. For simple cleanup and sanitizing between meals, a dishwasher-safe tray or tray insert is also a good idea.
