by Raymond Archambault

For our physical health and comfort, it’s crucial that we have a reliable source of clean water no matter where we are. The bottled water was an outstanding invention for this reason, but it is simply horrendous for the environment. As an alternative, you can use a filtered water bottle. These advanced water bottles can filter out hard metals, chemicals, bacteria, parasites, debris of all kinds, and even microplastics. It may surprise you, but about one quarter of bottled water is simply filtered tap water. Why not do this yourself at home and avoid the environmental and financial costs or purchasing bottled water?

Using a filtered water bottle is a no-brainer, but how do you choose one? How do you know which type of filter you need? To help you answer these questions and more, we’ve put together a guide on filtered water bottles with a great list of some of the best filtered water bottles in Canada for your convenience. LifeStraw LSGOV2CR45 Go Water Filter Bottle Video Review

What We Think of the LifeStraw LSGOV2CR45 Go Water Filter Bottle

LifeStraw offers one of the safest and most effective filtered water bottles on the market. It is incredibly lightweight to limit the burden on your shoulders when travelling, and it has a capacity of 0.68 L. This model is better used with more frequent access to a water source since the capacity is less than one liter, but that won’t be too much of a problem for most people. It comes with a carabiner to make it easier to store on your travelling equipment.

This bottle has two filters, a membrane straw type filter and a carbon filter at the top of the bottle. This system means it can trap everything that can contaminate water (bacteria and parasites, chemicals, debris, and microplastics) and give you the best tasting water possible. The flexible silicone mouthpiece is highly flexible, which makes it more durable and easier to clean than other styles.

This water bottle produces the best tasting water I’ve ever had. It’s pretty amazing what it can do with nasty lake water, honestly. I feel completely safe drinking it, and the carabiner makes it really easy to keep with me when I’m hiking. I wish it could fit more water at a time, but it really does work well so I’m not going to complain about that too much. Just something to be aware of.

Finn S.

The membrane filter on this model has a 4000L lifespan, so while you’ll have to replace the carbon filter every 100L or so, the main filter will last much, much longer. This model is also really easy to use because you simply have to suck on the straw to filter our water while you drink. This process will get more difficult as the filter nears the end of the lifespan, but it is a good clue that it’s time to replace the main component of this water bottle.

GRAYL Geopress Water Purifier Video Review

What We Think of the GRAYL Geopress Water Purifier

This Geopress Water Purifier has one of the most unique designs of any other products on the market. Its unique filtration design works via a press system. You fill up the main water bottle, and then push the interior component down through the water. The interior component has a large filter on the bottom, so you are essentially pressing all the clean water through the filter while all the nasty stuff you don’t want to drink remains isolated.

This bottle comes in 4 different colors so you can choose a style that matches your preferences, and it weighs only 1.1 lbs. Its heavy-duty filter truly does purify the water rather than just filter it, because it traps viruses/bacteria/protozoa, pesticides, chemicals, heavy metals, debris, and microplastics. The filter has a 250 L lifespan, which isn’t the greatest, but the cleaner the water is when you purify it, the longer the filter will last.

Follow the instructions! That is the best advice I can give you. I was scared of wrecking the bottle when I first started using it, so I thought it was defective. Turns out, I just wasn’t putting enough arm strength into it. You will need a solid surface to get the filter through all the water, but it is well worth the workout. The water comes out really clean and I haven’t needed to replace the filter yet!

Georgiana E.

The press system makes it very easy to know when to change the filter. It should take around 8 seconds to clear all the water, but once this reaches about 25 seconds, the filter has reached its cleansing limit. This model has a 0.71 L capacity, and a well-designed drink cap to improve water flow and prevent contamination. The entire system is highly durable, making it a great addition to canoeing or backpacking trips.

Katadyn 8018006 Befree Water Microfilter with Hydrapak Video Review

What We Think of the Katadyn 8018006 Befree Water Microfilter with Hydrapak

We all know how limited a commodity space can be on camping, canoeing, and backpacking trips. Even simple hiking trips can require a significant amount of supplies depending on the duration and weather conditions. For those times when space is limited, the Katadyn Befree filtered water bottle is the thing you need. It has a large 1L capacity, but its malleable design and small cap means it can be folded up tight to squeeze into any space.

Speaking of squeeze, this bottle has a very easy filter to work. It is a small straw-type filter that attaches to the cap, so to filter and drink the water, you simply need to tilt the bottle up and squeeze. This forces the water through the filter and restricts contamination to essentially zero. The water that comes out is free of bacteria, protozoa, debris, and chemicals, and will not have an aftertaste. This model can’t filter out viruses or hard metals, so it should only be used with flowing water.

I absolutely love this water bottle for camping. I fill it up with the lake water, and I used it once at a river while hiking too. It produces really crisp water that tastes great, and I love that I can just roll it up and shove it in my bag when I don’t need it. This is the most convenient and durable filtered water bottle I’ve ever owned; I recommend it for all outdoorsy people!

Jenn P.

The filter has a lifespan of 1000 L, and the entire unit weighs only 0.1 lbs, maximizing the convenience of this filtered water bottle to its fullest. This is one of the simplest designs of any filtered water bottle, so it is great for individuals new to filtered water bottles or those with simpler needs. This model has a great value to price ratio, and that’s why we recommend it as our top compact pick.

Brita Premium Filtering Water Bottle Video Review

What We Think of the Brita Premium Filtering Water Bottle

Brita filtering systems are some of the most well known for at home use. Although they are only safe to use on tap water with their limited filtering capabilities, there is no better brand for getting fresh, crisp water out of your taps. Their filtering water bottle is no exception to this. It can filter out chlorine and odorous compounds, but that’s all, so it should only be used with pre-filtered water from taps.

This bottle is really easy to use because you simply have to suck on the straw to both filter the water and drink. It has a 0.77 L capacity, quite respectable for a bottle of this kind. It weighs only 0.5 lbs too, so it is great for carrying around school or work. The filter lifespan is quite limited at 151 L; with everyday use, this will last only about two months.

If you want to improve the taste of your water at home, this is the bottle to do it. I’ve always found the water in my apartment a bit metallic in taste, and this filter has completely taken that away. Now I get to enjoy fresh water every single day, and I can drink as much as I want without worrying about drinking harmful substances I don’t know about.

Catherine N.

This unit is designed to fit into cupholders perfectly with a diameter just over four inches, and with a leak proof lid, you’ll never have to worry about spills. The bottle and mouthpiece are also dishwasher safe, so it is hassle-free to keep clean. With its high affordability and great design, this filtered water bottle can make a great addition to any household with less-than-satisfactory tap water.

Epic Nalgene OG Water Bottle with Filter Video Review

What We Think of the Epic Nalgene OG Water Bottle with Filter

Epic Nalgene OG brings us a lightweight, highly effective filtered water bottle. The bottle comes in two sizes, a 1L and a 1.4L. We are going to focus on the 1.4 L as our high-capacity choice. You can get this bottle in three different colors (blue, grey, and pink) to suit anyone’s preferences. It weighs only 0.7 lbs when empty, and is very easy to use since it has the simple straw-type filter that allows you to simply suck the water up like any normal water bottle.

This filtered water bottle can clear anything from contaminated water, including debris, pathogens, chemicals, chlorine, heavy metals, pollutants, and pharmaceutical compounds. Your water will be the purest it can possibly get and won’t have an aftertaste. This bottle is quite expensive and the filter only lasts for about 285 L, but it is well worth it for the performance.

This is the first filtered water bottle I’ve found that had a capacity larger than 1 L. I needed a filtered bottle for camping trips, and I’ve always had to carry two because I spend so much time away from a water source. This one has made my life so much easier, and it traps absolutely everything it could possibly trap. It’s incredibly lightweight for such a big bottle too, huge bonus.

Amir Q.

This bottle comes with a lifetime warranty as well, so you will never have to bear the financial burden of replacing such a high quality, highly priced filtered water bottle. The filters this bottle uses are completely recyclable, so you won’t have any waste there either. This bottle is highly durable and it best for people who will be travelling long distances with infrequent access to a water source for refills.

Brita Fill&Go Active Water Filter Bottle Video Review

What We Think of the Brita Fill&Go Active Water Filter Bottle

Brita’s Fill&Go filtered water bottle is the best option for people who prefer a more durable, softer material for their water bottles. Kids and clumsy individuals will benefit the most from this malleable water bottle as it is crack proof and easier to grip than ordinary water bottle materials. It has a fairly small capacity of 0.6 L, and it’s best used at home for that reason.

This bottle weighs only 0.4 lbs, so there are no worries about it being too heavy too carry when full, even for children. It can only filter chlorine and microparticles, so you should only use it with tap water to ensure drinking safety. There won’t be any aftertaste to the water, which is the main reason people usually purchase a Brita product.

Brita has been one of my favorite brands for a while now. I have a big water filter jug in my fridge, but I wanted something that was portable and easy to take with me when I go to school. This bottle makes both my home water and university water taste to much better, and it’s malleable design means I don’t have to worry about it cracking when I drop it (happens a lot, I’m clumsy).

Derek P.

The mouthpiece is a pop-up design, and you’ll need to suck the water up through the filter to drink it. This isn’t out favorite design since the mouthpiece can get contaminated, but since it will ideally only be used with tap water at home or the office, this won’t be too much of a concern. This model is highly affordable and dishwasher safe, so it can easily become a part of any household.

Our Final Opinion About the Brita Fill&Go Active Water Filter Bottle

[usrlist Quality:4 Effectiveness:3 Design:4 Price:5]

Overall, the Brita Fill&Go Active Water Filter Bottle is the superior choice for people looking for a softer, squeezable water bottle. It has a small capacity and limited filtration capabilities, but for at home use with safe water, you’ll greatly appreciate the new taste this bottle can give to your drinking experience.

Brita 36393 Premium Filtering Water Bottle Review

Brita Premium Filtering Water Bottle, 20 Oz, Stainless Steel

The Insulated Alternative
Brita

If you like being outdoors in hot weather, you know the value of cool water. Filtered water bottles that are also insulated can be difficult to find indeed, and that’s why we are bringing you this perfect combination in the Brita 36393 Premium Filtering Water Bottle.

See price
on Amazon

What We Think of the Brita 36393 Premium Filtering Water Bottle

This Brita model is another one that should only be used with pre-filtered tap water. It cannot remove any harmful substances, only chlorine and odorous compounds, so it shouldn’t be used with water from natural sources like lakes and rivers. This bottle is quite heavy at a full pound, but it is this heavy for a reason. Plastic water bottles often are not insulated to preserve the coldness of our water, so this stainless-steel model is the insulated alternative.

It has a filter life of only 151 L so it will require frequent replacements, but the filters should not be too much of an additional cost for you. The affordability of this bottle for initial purchase will help balance out the expense of extra filters. Its capacity is low at 0.6 L, but since tap water is highly accessible in many locations, we don’t expect this to become a problem for anyone.

This filtered water bottle has been the best purchase I’ve made in quite some time. It does have a smaller capacity, but I just use it to improve the taste of my water when I’m at home, so I always have access to more water whenever I empty the bottle. It’s really easy to suck the water through the filter and it really just tastes pure and clean. Huge fan of this Brita bottle.

Clarissa E.

This filtered water bottle is designed to fit well in cupholders with a diameter of only 3”, and it can slide easily into backpack pockets. It has a simple straw filter design so you can drink normally by sucking up the water, and you’ll find this bottle eliminates any aftertaste that usually accompanies tap water. Its insulating properties can keep water cold for up to 24 hrs, so this is best for people who only like cold water or will be keeping the bottle in the sun.

The water will also taste better, so you will have less problems reaching your recommended intake.

The health benefits of filtered water bottles are numerous. They can remove pathogens like viruses and bacteria, and particulates like dirt and sand from fresh water sources. Some are advanced enough to remove chemicals and hard metals from your water as well. Even the most basic models can remove chlorine, so you can be sure that you are always putting safe, contaminate-free water into your body. Especially when travelling in different countries, you’ll be safe from illness.

How to Properly Choose Your Filtered Water Bottle

Filtered Water Bottle

  1. Price.

You can find filtered water bottles for under $50, but these ones are often so limited in filtering capabilities that they are only safe to use with tap water. Bottles between $50 and $100 are more ideal for use from fresh water sources like rivers because they can tackle pathogens and debris that may make you ill. There are some filtered water bottles above $100 that are incredibly high quality, but it isn’t necessary to spend that much.

  1. Size.

The size of the water bottle you get will affect its capacity and its portability. Larger filtered water bottles are great for longer durations of backpacking when you won’t be near a water source all the time. These will be heavier to carry when full and also harder to pack. Smaller water bottles will cost less and will fit into cupholders, but you’ll have to refill more often if you drink frequently due to the reduced capacity.

  1. Filter Function.

Different filters can filter different things. Some are only good for chlorine and particulates, and others can be used to remove all types of pathogens, particulates, chemicals, odors, and even pharmaceutical compounds from your water. If you will be drinking from heavily contaminated sources, you’ll want a filter with the highest functionality you can find.

  1. Lid Style.

There are many kinds of lids you can find on filtered water bottles. Some have twist tops, some have mouthpieces that come up, and others have pull-up mouth pieces. Some lids are completely enclosed and others have a small protective shield over the mouthpiece. Also, some lids will be leak-proof and others won’t. It’s up to you to decide which style suits your preferences and uses best.

  1. Filter Life.

The lifespan of a filter determines its overall quality and how often you’ll need to replace it. Some filters have a lifespan as short as 100 L and others can reach 10x that amount. It is important to note that the contamination level of the water you drink and your cleaning routine can also affect the lifespan of a filter. If you will be using your filtered water bottle for long trips or with highly contaminated water, it’s best to get one that has a filter with a longer lifespan.

  1. Aftertaste.

All filtered water bottles should remove any taste from your water, since if they are working properly, all the compounds that can give it a bad taste should be completely removed from the water by the time it reaches your mouth. However, there are some that may allow compounds to slip through, so double check the product details to guarantee a fresh taste.

  1. Filter Style.

There are a couple different kinds of filters that can be in filtered water bottles. Some have a bottom filter that require you to push the water through, others have a straw-type setup that filters water as you suck the water up, and others have a filter at the top of the bottle that allows you to drink normally (tilted bottle and easy water flow). The best style for you depends on your drinking preference.

  1. Extra Features (carabiner, malleability, etc.)

Some filtered water bottles come with extra features like mouthpiece covers, carabiners, or a malleable exterior. These will often raise the price of the bottle slightly, but can be worth it for the added convenience and comfort of your filtering and drinking experience.

  1. Warranty.

Warranty coverage can be a little bit difficult to find with this product, but some companies go so far as to give their filtered water bottle a lifetime warranty. These are our favorite products because there is the guarantee of free replacements if your bottle is defective, and it just shows a lot of confidence in a product. That is definitely something we can get behind.
