The Best Exercise Bikes in Canada in 2021 – Reviews and Buying Guide

by Julien Gandelin

When it comes to looking and feeling your best, there are hundreds of recommendations out there for diets, exercise, and lifestyle changes to help you along the journey. However, some of these can be incredibly trying, or simply impossible if you work odd hours, are a parent, or struggle to find time for a hundred other reasons. An indoor stationary exercise bike is the first step to your weight loss or healthy lifestyle changes.

Indoor exercise bikes are one of the most popular fitness routines since you can workout no matter the weather outside and can workout by watching tv or another entertaining activity. Plus, they combine strength and cardio training for an easy full-body workout. The best part; they are both beginner friendly and challenging for seasoned fitness enthusiasts since they are all capable of resistance adjustments.

Finding the right exercise bike for you can be challenging since each bike has different weight and height restrictions, price points, resistance types, and may track different stats. Each of these factors is important to take into account when choosing a bike, but how can you possibly keep track of all of them over dozens of bikes?

We factored in these elements and more and considered 932 customer reviews when analyzing 27 different bikes over 42 hours to bring you the best exercise bikes in Canada in 2021 in a number of categories.

Following our last update, we now recommend the Exerpeutic 1200 exercise bike for its quality, user-friendliness, ease of setup and storing, and ergonomic comfort.

Exerpeutic 1200 Exercise Bike Video Review

What We Think of the Exerpeutic 1200 Exercise Bike

The Exerpeutic exercise bike is a lightweight 43 lbs but can support up to 300 lbs – an almost unheard-of ratio. The sturdy steel frame is built to last and the larger seat will keep you feeling comfortable for longer. This exercise bike is foldable up to half of its width and can be easily tucked away out of the way so you can use your space as normal when not using the bike.

This exercise bike uses a magnetic belt drive system to provide 8 varied levels of resistance so beginners and cycle enthusiasts can both feel a good burn during their workouts. This bike also has pulse sensors in the handle grips to measure your heart rate and let you know your beats per minute during interval training or cardio training.

I am a larger lady and needed an affordable exercise bike that has a higher capacity, which is actually very hard to find. I have used this bike every day this week and am loving it. it is very easy to adjust the difficulty and the display keeps me motivated to push myself a littler longer, which we all need. It folds up into a 1.5ft by 2ft space.

Karen C.

The large, easy-to-read display will keep you updated regarding your time, speed, distance, and calories burned so you can stay motivated to hit your target numbers, whatever they may be. The seat on this bike is adjustable to fit any rider from 5’3” to 6’1” comfortably. All of these features paired with its very reasonably price make this Exerpeutic exercise bike our top choice.

Assault Fitness Air Bike Trainer Video Review

What We Think of the Assault Fitness Air Bike Trainer

This dual action exercise bike by Assault Fitness provides a challenging full-body workout with unlimited resistance. The bike uses a large fan to provide unlimited resistance to push even the most accomplished athletes since it will steadily get more difficult to maintain your speed. The handle bars move with the pedals similar to the functionality of an elliptical machine to work your upper body better than any other type of exercise bike.

The seat is less comfortable than some other exercise bikes since it isn’t as wide but it does adjust vertically, horizontally, and can be tilted to suit your preferences and height. The sturdy steel frame can support up to 350lbs and uses twenty sealed ball bearings to provide a perfectly smooth experience.

This air resistance bike makes for very challenging workouts. It is built very well and is incredibly sturdy even under higher weights (I’m 6’3 and 320 lbs). It was surprisingly easy to put together with the help of a YouTube video even though it looks more complicated than the usual belt drive resistance bikes. A lot of gyms have these since they provide such a good workout, and I’m loving having it in my home.

Warren G.

This exercise bike can track all of your important stats including calories, distance, time, speed, RPMs, and heart rate. The digital console also gives 7 different preprogrammed workout programs which cover interval training, Tabata, watts, heartrate, or you can set your own calorie or distance goals. This machine is significantly more expensive than the others on our list but delivers a gym-quality workout in the comfort of your own home.

Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B0418 Under Desk Bike Video Review

What We Think of the Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B0418 Under Desk Bike

The Sunny Health & Fitness under desk bike is the perfect solution for those who want to get healthier but work long hours or have too many responsibilities to make time for a workout outside of work. This mini exercise bike only includes the pedals and drive system so you can use it while sitting on the couch or slide it under your office desk for a convenient workout at any time of the day – make your endless meetings more productive by exercising while your boss drones on and on!

Persons of 220 lbs and under can use this mini stationary bike without incident and set their desired tension level to any of the eight difficulty settings. This bike can be used with your feet with adjustable pedals or with your hands for an upper workout. The straps on the pedal are adjustable to fit either and any size.

This small exercise “bike” fits nicely under my desk, though you have to sit a bit back from it so your knees don’t the table. The tension settings are pretty great, the low one is easy but the higher few are actually tough and will make your legs burn after a couple of minutes. It is one solid piece and seems to be lasting well.

Sofia W.

The display will tell you your calories burned, distance pedalled, speed, and ODM. Though this is a portable unit, it weights 21 lbs, which is about half the weight of some normal upright bikes, making it a bit of a workout on its own to move it from one location to another. Plus, even though the handle has grips for your fingers, the pedals make it very award to carry without stabbing yourself in the side with every step. If you don’t plan on moving it too often, you shouldn’t have any complaints with this under desk exercise bike.

Xterra FB150 Foldable Exercise Bike Video Review

What We Think of the Xterra FB150 Foldable Exercise Bike

The Xterra exercise bike is the most lightweight upright bike at only 33 lbs, making it the easiest to move from your workout spot to its storage location without breaking your bike. Plus, it has wheels built in for a smoother transition from place to place. Once back in its rest spot, you can fold this bike to have its width to take up much less space. It easily folds and opens back up so you can get the most of your space at all times.

The supremely balanced flywheel on this bike makes for an incredibly quiet ride so you can exercise while on a call or while your baby sleeps in the next room, or in the same room if your heavy breathing won’t wake your child – trust us, that will be the loudest part of your workout. That, and the cursing maybe?

The description didn’t lie when it said you could do a conference call while using this bike, it is very quiet. It was quick and easy to put together. I am 5’10” and my knees don’t hit the bike so a little bit taller person could probably use this as well. The pedals grip your shoes well so you don’t slide around or fall off and the seat is large and comfortable for a bike seat.

Nick P.

This bike can be adjusted manually to any of the 8 tension levels for a personalized workout and the seat is also easily adjustable for anyone between 4’10” and 5’10”. Unfortunately, super tall people won’t be able to use this bike comfortably since the seat won’t rise high enough and the weight capacity is only 220 lbs, but it is a great option for shorter, smaller people wanting to get in shape and stay fit.

  • Very quiet

Our Final Opinion About the Xterra FB150 Foldable Exercise Bike

Quality:4 out of 5 stars
Effectiveness:5 out of 5 stars
Design:4 out of 5 stars
Price:5 out of 5 stars

The Xterra exercise bike is an affordable exercise machine that is better suited to smaller people since it is not as sturdy or strong as higher-end models. For such a reasonable price, you will have to settle for a lower-quality bike, but it performs its basic functions well.

ProGear 3102 Foldable Upright Exercise Bike Video Review

What We Think of the ProGear 3102 Foldable Upright Exercise Bike

The ProGear upright bike is the most compact on our list. It starts out at just 32” in length but folds to half that so that it actually takes up less floor space than an under-desk stationary bike. At only 35 lbs, this bike is also easy to maneuver alone. Unfortunately, this compact stature means that it can only support a person of up to 220 lbs, making it a better choice for shorter people even though the seat can adjust to fit a 6’ person.

This bike uses a dual transmission flywheel with 8 levels of magnetic tension to provide a challenging workout for seasoned cyclists or avid spin-class goers while also offering easier levels for beginners. The handle bars are long and rounded to support your hands and elbows during high-intensity cycling sessions and are equipped with pulse sensors to keep you apprised of your heart rate at all times.

This bike is wonderfully silent; I use it while watching tv and can easily have a conversation while it’s running too. The height adjustment of the seat is simple and works for me (5’11) and my wife (5’2”). I like that it comes with wheels on the bottom supports so you can wheel it back and forth from its storage space and the tv.

Mike M.

The large display shows the calories burned, current speed, total distance, time elapsed, and your pulse so you can track your progress and have a statistical representation of your fitness journey. The seat on this ProGear exercise bike is contoured to be more comfortable so those longer workout sessions are a bit more bearable, and the flywheel is incredibly quiet so you can watch tv or listen to music without deafening your neighbors to hear it over the bike.

Exerpeutic 900XL Recumbent Exercise Bike Video Review

What We Think of the Exerpeutic 900XL Recumbent Exercise Bike

This Exerpeutic exercise bike is a recumbent bike, meaning you sit back from the pedals in a super comfortable seat with back support to cycle, rather than sitting upright tin typical bike fashion. Recumbent bikes are great because they reduce the stress on your joints and are more comfortable than upright bikes.

This recumbent bike has a 300 lb weight capacity and can fit any height since the seat slides up close and far back from the pedals. The seat and back support are at the perfect angle to provide optimal support while you pedal and the handle bars have pulse detectors so you can monitor your heart rate at different points in your workout and track your cardiovascular health and progress over time.

This exercise bike is very comfortable with a much larger seat and a backrest for support. I used to only be able to pedal for 20 minutes but now I can do 45-minute workouts instead. It is easy to put together in about an hour and adjusting the chair takes about 3 seconds. It is virtually noiseless and has had no wear and tear over the last 18 months.

Miles P.

You can choose between 8 tension levels and build up your leg strength with challenging interval training while avoiding stress to the joints. A few things to note with this recumbent exercise bike; you may find it difficult to see your stats while pedalling since you sit much further back from the display, this machine does not provide a great middle body or any upper body workout, and the machine does not fold or become more space conscious in any way, so you will need more space for it.

Marcy NS-652 Foldable Exercise Bike Video Review

What We Think of the Marcy NS-652 Foldable Exercise Bike

The Marcy exercise bike has a sturdy steel frame and can support 300 lbs, which is quite surprising given its small stature. This bike sits you upright straighter than many others so you can stand and ride faster more comfortably, providing a great alternative to attending a weekly spin class at your gym. This bike uses magnetic resistance control with 8 tension levels to deliver an intense workout no matter your status as a cyclist.

This bike has counterweighted pedals with adjustable straps for any sized foot and shoe as well as an adjustable foam-padded seat for people with heights ranging anywhere from 5’3+. Unfortunately, this bike is not a great fit for shorter people as you will struggle to reach the pedals even at the lowest seat setting. The large display keeps track of your distance, total time, current speed, and total calories burned. This bike does not have any pulse monitoring.

The Marcy foldable exercise folds up to take up only a 1.5 sq. ft. space roughly which is fantastic for my cramped apartment. It is very sturdy and well-made and feels like a $1000 bike rather than a couple hundred. It works quietly so you can listen to music or watch tv while you exercise and is easy to manually adjust the tension for an easier or more difficult workout.

Emily U.

The handlebars are extremely comfortable and allow you to adjust your grip for sitting or standing during your workout and the compact design of the bike allows you to sit straight rather than lean forward, saving your back from strain. This exercise bike folds easily for storage and has a rubberized base so it won’t scratch your floors during your workout or when moving to another location.

Things to Know Before Buying an Exercise Bike

What are the Benefits of Using an Exercise Bike?

There are many benefits to using an exercise bike:

  • Helps with weight loss
  • Provide a low-impact workout for better joint health
  • Boost cardio fitness
  • Burns body fat
  • Much safer than cycling on the road
  • Save money on gym memberships and spins classes
  • Strengthen leg muscles
  • Can workout in any weather since it’s indoor
  • Easy interval training
  • Lower risk of type 2 diabetes
  • Endorphins released during exercise
  • Promote good cholesterol
  • Benefits against degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s

What Are the Different Types of Exercise Bikes?

Exercise bikes come in few different styles:

A recumbent bike is horizontally-aligned to provide better support to the bike and a higher comfort level to users. There is no upper body workout associated with this bike and they don’t fold like other types for storage.

An upright bike is the most common type of exercise bike and looks most similar to the standard outdoor bike. You can track your stats and adjust the resistance on these bikes to customize your workout. They also usually fold in half to save space.

A dual action exercise bike provides a full body workout by having the handle bars move in sync with the pedals, similar to an elliptical machine. They provide the most intense workout and often use air resistance rather than belt tension. This is typically the most expensive type of exercise bike.

An under-desk bike is a small unit with pedals that can be used under your desk or at your couch for a lower body workout when working or watching tv. They are often the most inexpensive option.

What Parts of the Body Get Exercised When Using an Exercise Bike?

Depending on the type of bike you use and whether you stand or sit to ride, you’ll enjoy a full body workout:

  • Lower body muscles including the glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps, and calves
  • Abdominal and back muscles
  • Upper body muscles including the biceps and triceps, as well as shoulders

How to Properly Choose Your Exercise Bike

  • Budget.

Your budget is the main consideration when searching for an exercise bike. As is common with exercise equipment, you’ll be looking at a minimum of a few hundred dollars for a sturdy exercise bike. However, they do range to several thousands for a high-quality, gym-quality stationary bike, so your budget may impact the resistance, frame, stat tracking, and weight capacity of the bike you end up deciding on.

  • Weight Capacity.

The weight capacity is important to keep in mind, especially if you’re a taller and larger person. Some exercise bikes only take 220 lbs while others can support 300 or 350 lbs. Make sure to choose a bike that can support your weight so you don’t risk damaging the bike.

  • Resistance Type.

The most common resistance type in exercise bikes is magnetic belt tension since this type usually has 8 different resistance levels that you can set according to your fitness level and desired challenge. However, these types do have a limit to the resistance they’re capable of. If you outgrow your belt tension bike, an air resistance bike has unlimited resistance and will provide a challenging workout to the most esteemed athletes.

  • Size and Portability.

Most upright exercise bikes are designed to fold up nearly in half for portability, but some air resistance and recumbent exercise bikes won’t change their shape and aren’t a great choice if you don’t have the space for them in their regular shape. You should also consider the weight of the bike since you’ll have to move the bike back and forth, though many stationary bikes have wheels on one part of the base so you can tip and roll the bike wherever you want. Keep in mind that the height of the bike will increase when you fold it up, so make sure your storage space is tall enough for the added height.

  • Digital Tracking.

Stationary bikes are capable of tracking your distance, time, calories burned, and speed. Some exercise bikes even have pulse sensors in the handle grips so you can keep track of your heart rate throughout your workout as well. These stats can be great motivation to keep going when you’re growing tired and want to quit, so try to find a bike that can track most of these stats for you. Of course, a larger display will make these stats easier to read, so that would be a plus on your exercise bike as well.

  • Warranty.

The warranty on an exercise bike typically only applies to the motor when you get past the one- or two-year mark, though some warranties cover everything and some bikes don’t have a warranty at all. The longer the warranty the better to protect your investment, especially when you’re spending over $1000 on your exercise bike. One of the first things you should do when you get your exercise bike is to register for the warranty if it isn’t automatic with your purchase even if it is only a year of coverage.

  • Adjustable Seat.

Exercise bikes come with an adjustable seat to cater to most heights, though some seats will only go up and down to suit your leg length. Other bike seats will also be adjustable horizontally to bring you more forward on the bike, and some higher-end exercise bikes will also have a tilt function so you can truly customize the seat and have a more comfortable workout. Recumbent bike seats only slide horizontally, but they don’t require vertical adjustments since you’re seated level with the pedals.
