The Best Coffee Grinders in Canada in 2021 – Reviews and Buying Guide

by Véronique Raymond

The joy you feel when drinking a particularly great cup of coffee is hard to beat, but going to the coffee once or three times a day can become a pain – and a fairly large expense. Among many other factors including temperature, brew type, and how it’s made, the freshness of your coffee grounds is paramount to an amazing tasting coffee. Unfortunately for all of us bulk purchasers, as soon as you open your container of pre-ground coffee, the flavor starts to diminish.

It can be really easy to achieve that super fresh taste at home by using a coffee grinder to make fresh coffee grounds for your daily dose of caffeine. By grinding minutes, hours, or even days before your morning coffee, the aroma and flavour of your coffee will match that of your favourite coffee shop every time. But what coffee grinder is the right one for you?

To save you the time of endless searching and back-and-forth about the pros and cons of dozens of different grinders, we took the liberty of doing all that research for you, and even went one step further. We considered 1257 consumer reviews and 31 different coffee grinders over 41 hours to bring you a smaller list of the best performers and top-rated coffee grinders for your consideration.

Following our last update, we recommend the Cuisinart DBM-8C Supreme Grind automatic Burr Mill coffee grinder for numerous automatic grind settings, large grounds capacity, and outstanding ease of use.

Cuisinart DBM-8C Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill Video Review

What We Think of the Cuisinart DBM-8C Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill

The Cuisinart supreme automatic coffee grinder uses multiple wheel type burr plates that grind beans for ultimate flavour and maximum consistency for a smoother, uniform grind. This coffee grinder has a large hopper that can hold 8 oz of coffee beans for all of your bulk coffee-making tasks – you won’t have to fill it up more than once unless you’re making more than 32 cups of coffee, which we recommend seeking a counselor for rather than a larger coffee grinder.

The grinder has 18 particle size options that allow you to achieve the perfect coarse grind for a French press or a consistent fine grind for your espresso machine. The dial simple rotates for you to make your selection prior to turning on the machine. You can also select between 4-18 cups using a slide dial to tell the machine how much grounds you need. The automatic timer shuts off the machine once your desired amount of grounds has filled the chamber.

So far I am really enjoying this Cuisinart coffee grinder. I love the automatic settings that grind any way I want. It also doesn’t static cling like many other grinders. It isn’t as noisy as the last coffee grinder I had. It grinds quickly if you’re grinding directly before making your coffee and after a bit of trial and error, I found the perfect ground size for my espresso machine.

Deb F.

The grinder has convenient cord storage under the base so if you must leave it on the counter permanently to keep your coffee maker company, you won’t have to put up with any type of eyesore. This coffee grinder comes with a scoop and a cleaning brush to make maintenance and use just a touch easier. The grinder doesn’t have as many settings as some more expensive models, but 18 choices should be enough for most people no matter how many types of coffee they drink.

Baratza Encore Conical Burr Coffee Grinder Video Review

What We Think of the Baratza Encore Conical Burr Coffee Grinder

The Baratza coffee grinder is a more advanced but still incredibly easy machine to use for grinding your coffee beans every morning. It features only two controls; a pulse button and a very straightforward on/off button. The pulse button allows you to grind directly into any espresso brew basket from the discharge chute, saving you an extra step in the morning.

This grinder features 40 precise grind options for all of your espresso, French press, and drip coffee maker requirements. To select a grind setting, simply use the dial at the top and let the slow-rotating conical burrs do their job. Since the burrs are slow-rotating, you won’t produce any heat and will extract the ultimate flavour and aroma out of the beans for a better tasting coffee compared to faster machines.

This coffee grinder is honestly amazing. I can’t believe how many grounds options I have, and I’ve tried nearly all of them now. I have both an espresso machine and a regular coffee machine so I really enjoy that I can customize my grounds for each machine and purpose. It was a bit bigger than I expected but it works so well that I think it deserves its own place on my counter anyway.

Lucas P.

The bean hopper holds a large 2 ½ cups of beans so you can go several days if not more without having to refill the hopper. This is ideal for bulk coffee-making as well if you have friends or family visiting who share your love of caffeine. The grounds container is a bit smaller, but not by much. This unit is larger than you might expect and will probably need to take up real estate on your counter permanently, but is worth the showcase given its impressive precision with 40 grind sizes.

Krups F203 Electric Spice and Coffee Grinder Video Review

What We Think of the Krups F203 Electric Spice and Coffee Grinder

The Krups spice and coffee grinder is priced the way it is because it is a manual, steel blade grinder. The interior blade sits in the hopper to grind your coffee beans. The manual button must be held down to grind the beans, and the longer you hold it, the finer your grind becomes. While this might sound fine, it prevents the consistency that some coffee drinkers require from their grounds and you’ll end up with some coarser grounders and some fine powdery grounds all at once.

However, this is a flaw with all blade grinders and not this unit, so you shouldn’t hold that against it if looking for a cheaper blade grinder. As for spices, this Krups machine performs surprisingly well with all types of dry spices including pepper, cinnamon, and coriander. The steel blade can handle any spice or coffee bean, but it can’t be removed, making cleaning a bit of a pain in the rear and perhaps the fingers as well.

This coffee grinder is the best, but it surely does the grind. It grinds your spices to your desired consistency; the longer you hold the button, the finer the grind gets. That being said, it is more difficult to clean this grinder effectively since the blade isn’t removable. The grind is also a bit lopsided if your beans don’t mix and move like they should.

Missy A.

The hopper capacity can hold enough coffee grounds for 12 cups of coffee, so you’ll need to grind in batches if preparing more or having a second round with your guests. This “flaw” is actually preferred by some people who don’t want to store their grounds since they begin the oxidation process so quickly. The shape of the grinder is designed for comfortable, ergonomic use with an oval shape and easy pouring with comfortable handling.

Baratza Virtuoso 587 Coffee Grinder Video Review

What We Think of the Baratza Virtuoso 587 Coffee Grinder

The Baratza Virtuoso coffee grinder is amazingly effective but also amazingly expensive, so take a deep breathe before jumping to the checkout page so we don’t feel guilty about inciting a heart attack. Many coffee connoisseurs claim that your grinder is more important than your coffee maker, so we’ll just leave it at that. The price is negated a bit by the 40 grind settings, automatic timer, and stylish modern make.

The Baratza grinder using steel conical burrs to produce a super consistent grind no matter how fine or coarse you need it to be, providing reliable quality and flavour of grounds and coffee every time. This grinder has a backlit LCD display and an adjustable timer to dose the perfect amount of coffee grounds for your single or multiple cups. The timer has an automatic shutoff so the grinder ceases its operation the second the timer ends for a consistent dose no matter how fine your grounds are.

I’m very happy with the consistency and quality of this coffee grinder. It produces minimal static buildup and remembers its last setting so you don’t have to keep adjusting it every time if you want the same thing every day. The canister isn’t as big as it could be for the price so I use a separate container for storage but is a very solid, effective piece of equipment.

Parker F.

The memory setting included on this unit remembers your last setting so you don’t have to fiddle with it every morning if you drink the same type of coffee requiring the same dose and size every morning. However, this memory function might be worthless to some people who change it up every day. Our only true complaint with this grinder is the extravagant price tag, but you do get what you pay for when it comes to coffee grinders.

Bodum Bistro 10903-01US Electric Burr Coffee Grinder Video Review

What We Think of the Bodum Bistro 10903-01US Electric Burr Coffee Grinder

The Bodum Bistro is another burr grinder with several usability features for a very reasonable price. You can choose between 14 grind settings from very fine to very coarse for all of your different coffee makers. The glass make of the grinder effectively reduces static and the burr technology provides an even grind for better consistency day in and day out.

This grinder is fully automatic and allows you to set a timer from 5 to 20 seconds depending on the dose of coffee grounds you need for your morning caffeination ritual – a sacred ritual, in fact. The timer automatically shuts off the burrs when you have enough coffee waiting in the grounds bin so you don’t have any extra that will sit and lose its flavour waiting for you to drink it.

Overall, I am very pleased with this Bodum Bistro grinder, which is worlds ahead of my last blade grinder. The grind is even and consistent with this machine and it is relatively quiet for a burr grinder. I like the automatic timer so I don’t have to measure the coffee when putting it into my coffee pot’s filter. This machine makes things so easy.

Sonya R.

If you don’t want to use the timer feature, you can opt for the quick grind button instead for a small dose of coffee grounds. The hopper includes a lid to keep beans fresh as well as a measurement guide that helps you to set your grinder up for the perfect grind without fail. The only flaw to note is the smaller capacity for grounds, resulting in the need to grind in batches if making multiple cups for multiple people when you have visitors.

For the features you get and the quality and consistency of the grind, we’re impressed by the reasonable price tag of this Bodum coffee grinder. This machine is a great alternative to higher-end burr grinders if you want high-quality without an excessive number of grind settings you’ll never use.

KitchenAid BCG111OB Coffee Grinder Video Review

What We Think of the KitchenAid BCG111OB Coffee Grinder

The KitchenAid coffee grinder is a budget-friendly alternative with one-touch controls for outstanding ease of use. The clear top allows you to easily watch your grounds while you grind, ensuring you stop at the right time when your grounds reach the size you’re looking for. Operation couldn’t be simpler, requiring pressure from you to begin grinding and stopping once you release the pressure.

The grinder uses stainless-steel blades for grinding your beans, but they aren’t removable for cleaning, so it’ll require a bit extra effort and patience on your part when it’s time to give it a bath. The hopper holds enough coffee for 12 cups and includes convenient measurement markings on the interior so you can accurately dose for 4, 8, 10, or 12 cups of coffee without any leftover coffee grounds.

This is a great coffee grinder. My old coffee grinders had more features, but I’ve found I don’t really need them so it’s fine for me that this one doesn’t have all the bells and whistles. The metal interior has been very durable so far and does not create static like other coffee grinders. There’s no mess of coffee beans flying all over the counter and it comes apart to clean easily.

Percy T.

This coffee grinder is compatible with a useful spice grinder accessory kit that includes stainless-steel grinding bowls as well as an optimized blade for spices including cumin, pepper, and coriander if you’d like extra precision for your spices. If not, the regular blade can grind your spices well, just inconsistently. The flaw of this machine, as with all manual blade grinders, is that your grind will be inconsistent at best and a total mess at worst, so this grinder is recommended for cheaper beans and drip coffee makers only.

Overall, the KitchenAid coffee grinder is a smaller unit that is a great choice for individuals and couples who don’t go through grounds at an impressive rate. As long as you don’t mind manual controls and blade grinders over burr grinders, you’ll get a lot of use out of this durable grinder.

Capresso 565 Infinity Conical Burr Grinder Video Review

What We Think of the Capresso 565 Infinity Conical Burr Grinder

The Capresso infinity coffee grinder is an aesthetically pleasing stainless steel with transparent hopper and grounds container for all of the coffee drinkers out there who love seeing the beans and grounds next to each other – we agree that it is incredibly satisfying. The hopper is fairly large at 8.5 oz and the grounds container holds a reasonable 4 oz, enough for your morning coffee without letting leftovers lose flavour and aroma.

This grinder offers 16 grind choices for your various coffee making appliances and uses a 100-watt conical burr for slow, consistent grounds with uniform size every day of the week. This grinder also has an automatic timer that will dose your grounds for you and automatically stop grinding when the time runs out. The grind selections are divided into four categories so you can narrow down your options when learning the machine.

We are very happy with our infinity grinder. It’s impressive, solid, and provides better grounds and a better cup of coffee from our Aeropress than what we used to buy in specialty coffee shops. Every single cup has been perfect with better taste and scent. We enjoy the consistency of our coffee and are very happy with the performance of the Capresso coffee grinder.

Janet M.

Both the hopper and the grounds container are easily removable for cleaning and the unit includes a brush for cleaning the beneath the removable upper burr. This model also has a safety lock mechanism that prevents the grinder from operating without the bean container in place, saving you from a large mess. The only flaw to note with this high-end grinder is that your grounds may get stuck in the chute sometimes, though banging on both sides of the unit tends to solve that minor issue pretty quickly.

Things to Know Before Buying a Coffee Grinder

What Are the Different Types of Coffee Grinders?

When looking at coffee grinders, you’ll find two main options that have varied levels of quality.

Blade Grinders

A blade grinder is a manual grinder and are popular due to their affordability. However, since they are cheap, you’ll be dealing with inconsistent grounds sizes ranging from coarse to powdery and everywhere in between. Unfortunately, this translates to poorer quality coffee. Since they are also manually operated by you, you run the risk of overgrinding and burning your coffee, resulting in a lower quality flavour as well. However, they work great for spices and are often marketed as coffee and spice grinders.

Burr Grinders

For a quality coffee flavour and uniform grind size, burr grinders are the way to go. They are the more expensive option and come in two designs: conical and flat. Conical burr grinders are quieter and the cheaper of the two. Flat burr grinders are more expensive but produce an even higher quality and consistent particle size. These types of coffee grinders are better for more expensive coffee beans for higher-quality coffees.

Why Do I Need a Coffee Grinder?

In short, better flavour! A coffee bean’s flavour comes from the resulting oils after roasting the beans. For the best flavour, the oils should be released evenly. Plus, the fresher the grounds, the fresher the coffee tastes. A grinder lets you grind immediately prior to making your coffee rather than have a large container that loses potency every time you open it.

What Are the Benefits of Grinding Your Own Coffee Beans?

There are several reasons why you’re better off grinding your own beans right before making coffee rather than using store-bought grounds:

  • Freshly ground coffee tastes and smells better
  • Whole beans last a lot longer than coffee grounds
  • You can make the right sized grounds for any coffee maker, French press, Espresso machine, and more
  • Get the coffee shop taste at home
  • No more stale coffee
  • Prevent contamination and wastage of pre-packaged grounds

How to Properly Choose Your Coffee Grinder

  • Cost.

If you’re in the market for a quality coffee grinder, you’ll need a higher budget for better durability and grinding technology. If you plan on using it every day, it will be a worthy investment, but not if you rarely use it. Choosing a more affordable grinder up front might make sense in the short term, but consider your long-term desires as well and determine if the cheaper choice is worth it if it needs to be replaced in a year or two.

  • Grind Options.

Some grinders have fewer than a dozen options while others have 40. The more the better if you drink an array of coffee types, but be prepared to spend a bit more for the variety. Grinders with pre-set grind settings are useful if you know which grind size you like and need for your coffee maker. Stepless grinders have no pre-set grind sizes and instead go by a general range.

  • Speed.

While it might seem counterintuitive, a higher speed is actually bad for your beans since it produces more heat that can burn your grounds and result in more bitter flavours. Most high-speed grinders have gear reduction technology to help with this side effect, but some people may prefer to steer clear of high speeds entirely.

  • Hopper and Tank Capacity.

Each coffee grinder has a different hopper capacity as well as a different grounds capacity. Usually, the hopper is larger than the grounds capacity in burr grinders, which lets you get several days of grounds out of one fill-up. With blade grinders, the hopper is where the beans are turned to grounds, and you’ll have to put new beans in every time. If you make several cups a day or make coffee for several people at once, you’ll need a larger capacity.

  • Material.

While it might seem to be a minor factor, the material of your coffee grinder affects the amount of static buildup that can cause beans to jump. In terms of the material of your blade or burr, the most common type is stainless steel, which is good, but ceramic burrs last longer and are better for the level of fineness you need for espresso, though they cost more.

  • Size.

Of course, you need to consider the size of the coffee grinder you choose if you have a smaller kitchen, limited counter space, or both. Especially since your counter may already be hosting a coffee maker and maybe an espresso machine, French press, or other advanced coffee machine, you should be sure that your grinder will fit in a cupboard somewhere to save your precious remaining counter real estate.

  • Ease of Cleaning.

Coffee grinders range from really simple to clean to a total pain in the butt. Blade grinders have less parts that need cleaning but the blade usually can’t be removed, so you’ll be stuck trying to get around it to clean the hopper. Burr grinders, on the other hand, have removable parts that make it a bit simpler to get in all the crevices. The best advice we can give you is to grind some rice in either type of grinder to get the rest of the bean debris out and remove odours.

We do our best to provide you with a comparative guide of coffee grinders allowing you to choose the best product possible. If we are missing information or new models, do not hesitate to leave a comment below or to send us a message.
