Table of Contents

Whether for bird watching, hunting, or any other outdoor activity requiring long-distance views or crystal-clear closeups, a good pair of binoculars is essential.

What most people don’t realize is just how complicated binoculars can be.

Though many of us ran around playing with children’s binoculars in our younger years, the adult versions are complex pieces of equipment similar to the performance of high-end telescopes and cameras.

For this reason, it’s important you know exactly what you’re looking for when shopping for a new pair of binoculars.

We spent 32 hours conducting intense research and an analysis of 685 customer reviews and 28 different pairs of binoculars to make sure we recommend the best binoculars in Canada.

Depending on how you plan to use your binoculars, you’ll require a different field of vision, objective lens, magnification, weight, and a bunch of other characteristics.

Since these features can be complicated to understand, we’ve also included a helpful checklist of how to choose a pair of binoculars so you understand what the specs mean and how to determine which pair of binoculars are right for you.

Following our last update, we recommend the Bushnell Performance Optics 133450C Falcon Binoculars for their quality, ease of use, and durability.

Bushnell Performance Optics 133450C Falcon Binoculars Video Review

What We Think of The Bushnell Performance Optics 133450C Falcon Binoculars

These Bushnell Falcon binoculars are one of the most impressive models on the market for a number of reasons. Let’s discuss construction first. These binoculars are made of high quality materials covered by a rubberized, abrasion-resistant finish. This makes them really durable and easy to use in any environmental conditions. Despite their quality they weigh only 1.8 lbs, so you can be sure that you’ll feel comfortable and energized no matter how long you are out with them.

These binoculars have a 10X magnification rating and a lens diameter of 50mm. While an eye relief measurement of 9 mm means that glasses-wearers won’t be able to use these, an exit pupil measuring 5 mm guarantees great image quality even in low light. This model is made with porro prism technology, resulting in some of the best visuals that can be had. The affordable price will astound you after you experience these binoculars for yourself.

These binoculars are amazing! I am so glad I went with this model. There were a few reasons that led me to that decision. These binoculars were really affordable, they are lightweight, and they feel really great in my hands. I can rely on their durability and the quality is insane. Whatever you’ll be using binoculars for, this product should be the one you get!

This model has a close focus distance of 25 ft, and a visual field of 300 feet at 1000 yards. Specs like these don’t come around every day. The automated focus guarantees a clear image even when following moving targets, so you’ll always get the best view no matter the circumstances. It may not come with any extras, but for an outstanding pair of binoculars, you won’t find better.

Celestron 71008 SkyMaster Binoculars Video Review

What We Think of The Celestron 71008 SkyMaster Binoculars

Celestron is a well known brand in the binocular world, and it’s no surprise that one of their most popular models has taken its place as our advanced choice. This model is one of the best for astronomical viewing and extremely long-distance terrestrial uses. Although a 25X magnification does narrow the field of vision and extend the close focus distance, your long-distance views will be unparalleled by any other binoculars on the market.

Although the 2.8 mm exit pupil would limit the amount of light you can see at night, the 70mm lenses allow nighttime viewing to be extraordinary. They are marketed for stargazing for that reason. The 13mm eye relief means that even people with glasses can be comfortable using these binoculars, and the folding eyecups make that a comfortable experience. The large focus dial located in the center makes focusing a really simple endeavor.

I have never been so impressed by a pair of binoculars. My wife wears glasses and I don’t, but the foldable eyecup means that we can both enjoy the same pair of binoculars. Although the exit pupil measurement is quite small, the large objective lenses allow for great nighttime viewing. The large magnification does limit the field of view a bit, but we only use them for stargazing so it doesn’t matter much to us.

The accessories that come with these binoculars are incredibly useful. The carrying case and lens cloth ensure that the binoculars are protected and clean at all times, and the durable, water resistant exterior means that you can use these binoculars in any weather. The tripod mount can relieve your arm and hand of holding up the 4.5 lb binoculars, which can make a big difference for extended durations.

Overall, the Celestron 71008 SkyMaster Binoculars are one of the most popular choices for a reason. The extreme magnification and user adaptability makes this the best model for stargazing and long-distance viewing. You’ll have to sacrifice on close up visuals, but the multiple accessories and great design elements only serve to increase the value of this product.

Celestron 71258 UpClose G2 Porro Binoculars Video Review

What We Think of the Celestron 71258 UpClose G2 Porro Binoculars

This Celestron model essentially only has one downside that we found to be significant. Instead of a single focus dial that allows easy adjustments for perfect viewing at any distance, this model requires you to first focus the left eye with a center dial, and then focus the right eye by adjusting a dial on the eyepiece. This can get frustrating and difficult to get right, so anyone purchasing the model will require some patience. It isn’t great for every viewing situation (moving targets) as a result.

Otherwise, these affordable binoculars are pretty great. With a 50 mm lens diameter and a magnification of 20X, these binoculars can give you a close distance focus of 42 ft and a 168 ft field of view at 1000 yards. The exit pupil and eye relief measurements are fairly average, with values of 2.5 mm and 7 mm, respectively. They won’t perform the best in limited lighting scenarios, but you will have great images during the day.

These binoculars are great for everybody, I think. The magnification is powerful and you can focus in on things pretty close up. I love setting it up on a tripod so I can always have a steady view, and I can easily show my family things I’ve noticed. The water resistance is great, we’ve been rained on a few times and the binoculars still work flawlessly. Great product.

frank o.

The overall design of this model is quite ideal for the user experience. They are water resistant, so you won’t be panicking if you get caught in the rain, and there are thumb indents to make their use more comfortable. The soft eyecups allow for use by people wearing glasses, and the accessories that are included in the purchase (soft carrying case, binocular straps, lens cloth, objective covers, and eyepiece covers) guarantee you have everything you need.

What We Think of the Gosky Professional Roof Prism Binoculars

The Gosky binoculars are made with a roof prism instead of a porro prism, and while still producing clear images, they will not be as crisp or bright as other binocular models using the porro prism. Combined with the lower magnification, this model is best suited to everyday uses such as watching sports games instead of more intricate activities like stargazing, where additional magnification is needed.

The binoculars weigh only 1.5 lbs, and they come with a case and a strap for wearing around your neck, making them one of the most convenient models as well. The best accessory is by far the phone attachment, as you don’t see this very often. It allows you to attach your phone to an eyepiece to take incredibly close up photos of things several hundred feet away from you. With a 1000-yard field of view of 307 feet, you’ll be able to capture anything you’d like.

My son is a professional football player, and I was looking for a new pair of binoculars to help me watch his games more closely. The low magnification helps me keep an eye on the entire field at once which is perfect, and they are really light weight to be comfortable even for long games. The best part is the phone attachment, I can take clear, close up pictures so easily.

steph m.

The eyepieces have twist up technology to adjust the eye relief, ensuring that even people with glasses can enjoy these binoculars. The 4.2 mm exit pupil guarantees good visibility even at night. If you prefer to avoid holding onto your binoculars, you can get set up with a tripod as long as you have or purchase and adapter.

Bushnell BN132514 PowerView Binoculars Video Review

What We Think of The Bushnell BN132514 PowerView Binoculars

There has never been a better pair of binoculars for kids than this Bushnell PowerView model. It weighs less than half a pound and comes with a string built on to the binoculars, reducing the risk that they’ll go missing while also giving your child the freedom to play however they want to. They are quite durable with their rubber armor coating, so they are essentially kid-proof.

The small lens diameter and exit pupil means these won’t be very good for use in the dark, but we don’t expect young kids to be out very long after sunset, so this shouldn’t be a problem. This is one of the most compact binocular models on the market, and they fold in half as well to make them even more portable. Kids can focus on objects as close as 20 ft, so it is perfect for kid-sized outdoor adventures.

My kids love to play in the woods surrounding our house and go out on the water, and they’ve been asking for some binoculars for a couple weeks now. I decided to go with these Bushnell binoculars since they were so affordable and easy for the kids to work. The string also increases the chances they won’t lose them. They work great for what my kids need them for.

jason b.

Aside from the attached neck string, you will also receive a lens cloth and a small carrying case for the binoculars. This can keep them clean and protected when not in use. The low magnification means they won’t perform as well as higher-end models, and this is a main reason why they are better suited to the simple needs of children rather than professional uses by adults.

What We Think of the VOVO Binoculars

The VOVO binoculars are one of the best models on the market for wide-view scenarios. With a 400 ft field of view at 1000 yards, you will not miss a single thing that you want or need to be seeing. The magnification of 10X allows this large field of view to occur, so although you won’t get the best detail for really far objects, this is the perfect scenario for seeing more of your surroundings at once.

The 50 mm lens diameter and 5 mm exit pupil make this pair one of the best for nighttime viewing, as the maximum amount of light is entering the lenses. The 10 mm eye relief is ideal for most people, but anyone with glasses will experience a struggle. Since the eyepieces are not adjustable to accommodate glasses wearers, they simply cannot use these binoculars, unfortunately.

What an awesome pair of binoculars! I work in telecommunications and I frequently need to monitor the connections on top of telephone poles. I bought these binoculars to replace my last pair, the focus dial broke after years of use. These binoculars actually work better than my last pair, providing me with more detail and producing crisper images. Would highly recommend for any activity.

These water resistant binoculars are built with a grippy rubberized exterior, allowing them to feel stable in your hands even during inclement weather. What We Think of The Usogood AT66 Binoculars

While many binoculars can make the claim of being water resistant, few go so far as to say they are completely waterproof. That is a statement quite unique to these Usogood binoculars. They are fully waterproof and fog-proof, and their durable rubber exterior is non-slip even when wet to ensure you always get the visuals you need.

This model has all of the specs ideal for varied uses. The 12X magnification gives a 1000-yard field of view of 367 ft, quite impressive for the quality of the image at that distance. The eye relief of 15.5 mm guarantees that even people who wear glasses can achieve a clear image, and the lightweight design ensures comfort for all, even with extended use. The 50 mm lens diameter and 4.2 exit pupil guarantee performance even in low light situations.

These are the best binoculars I have ever used. I am a wildlife specialist, and I spend hours out in the field observing behavior and travel routes of various species. More often than not I need to view the animals from a distance in order not to affect them, and I get caught in the rain more often than I should. These durable, waterproof binoculars are very reliable, and give clear images day and night.

bella u.

This model is incredibly easy to focus, even on moving targets, and that isn’t even the best part. The purchase will come with a long list of accessories, the best of which are the tripod and smartphone adapter. The tripod is quite small, but it is enough to keep the binoculars steady, and it can even be used at the same time as the phone adapter, allowing you to take great pictures, even of things very, very far away from you. In all honesty, this model is not missing anything.

Things to Know Before Buying Binoculars

Benefits of Using Binoculars

Binoculars have an extensive list of uses, and many people don’t even realize how versatile they can be. There are models designed for kids that are lightweight and simple in design, and there are models that come with many accessories and sophisticated technology. No matter which binoculars you end up purchasing, there are some benefits that are common to all of them. The most notable one is that it extends your field of vision. Using binoculars allows you to see things that are far away from you much more clearly. They are therefore beneficial for activates such as stargazing, watching wildlife, hunting, watching live sports, birdwatching, and so much more. Kids often use them to explore their environments more closely, and they even have professional uses. Researchers will use them to study wildlife and insects, they are used by police and other investigators, and even sectors such as telecommunications can make use of binoculars on a daily basis. Most binoculars are quite affordable, and they are all weather resistant to some degree. There are many attachments that can either come with a purchase or be bought separately to make your binoculars even more useful to you. You really don’t know what you’re missing until you start using them regularly.

How to Properly Choose Your Binoculars

Binoculars

  1. Price.

Binoculars will average out in price around $100. Many models are available right around that price point, but there are also many cheaper options between $50 and $75 that are still very high quality. The cheapest options will be priced between $20 and $30, and these are usually ideal for children as they are durable and very basic in design and functionality. Binoculars over $125 are possible, but the slight improvement in quality is often not worth the extra money.

  1. Sze.

Binoculars can come in a wide variety of sizes. Some of them are less than 6” long and can even fold to be more portable, and others are much larger. The objective lens size will affect the overall size, and typically, the larger the binoculars the more powerful they are because they can contain more technology. Even the largest binoculars can still be very lightweight, so don’t make the mistake of assuming large equals heavy.

  1. Magnification.

The magnification of the binoculars will determine how much detail you can see at long distances, and also how wide your field of vision would be. As a general rule, the higher the magnification, the smaller the field of view. This is because the binoculars can narrow in on a particular spot to give incredible detail. Stargazing is one activity that would benefit from a higher magnification since the objects are so, so far away, but activities like watching a sporting event would be suited to a lower magnification.

  1. Lens Diameter.

The lens diameter will affect how bulky the binoculars are and how much light can enter. If you’re interested in viewing things in low light situations, a larger diameter would be beneficial. Binoculars can be found in all kinds of combinations of magnification and lens diameter, so you’ll have no trouble finding the exact right product for your needs and adventures.

  1. Eye Relief.

The eye relief of a pair of binoculars isn’t an overly important aspect, but it is a crucial spec for people with glasses to pay attention to. If someone wearing glasses expects to be able to use binoculars, the eye relief must be at least 11 mm, but 16 mm is ideal. If the eye relief is less than that, the glasses prescription will negatively affect the viewing experience. Some binoculars come with adjustable or malleable eye pieces to make them usable by glasses wearers.

  1. Exit Pupil.

The exit pupil acts like a real pupil inside the binoculars. It contributes to the amount of light you see through the binoculars. You’ll want to avoid anything below 2.5 mm as you won’t be able to see very well at all in the dark, but values over 4 would be incredible for nighttime viewing. The values can go even higher depending on the quality of the binoculars.

  1. Close Focus Distance.

The close focus distance is the nearest point that the binoculars can focus on. Binoculars lower in magnification will typically have a shorter close focus distance, and those high in magnification will not be able to focus very closely to your location at all. It comes down to your needs and your intended activities to decide what the best specs are.

  1. 1000-yard Field of View.

The field of view at 1000 yards is a very standard spec detailing how much you can see through the binoculars. The higher the magnification, the smaller this field of view will be since you are focusing more closely on a certain area. Lower magnification binoculars can allow you to see a lot more of your surroundings at once, just without the details.
