If someone wearing glasses expects to be able to use binoculars, the eye relief must be at least 11 mm, but 16 mm is ideal. If the eye relief is less than that, the glasses prescription will negatively affect the viewing experience. Some binoculars come with adjustable or malleable eye pieces to make them usable by glasses wearers.
- Exit Pupil.
The exit pupil acts like a real pupil inside the binoculars. It contributes to the amount of light you see through the binoculars. You’ll want to avoid anything below 2.5 mm as you won’t be able to see very well at all in the dark, but values over 4 would be incredible for nighttime viewing. The values can go even higher depending on the quality of the binoculars.
- Close Focus Distance.
The close focus distance is the nearest point that the binoculars can focus on. Binoculars lower in magnification will typically have a shorter close focus distance, and those high in magnification will not be able to focus very closely to your location at all. It comes down to your needs and your intended activities to decide what the best specs are.
- 1000-yard Field of View.
The field of view at 1000 yards is a very standard spec detailing how much you can see through the binoculars. The higher the magnification, the smaller this field of view will be since you are focusing more closely on a certain area. Lower magnification binoculars can allow you to see a lot more of your surroundings at once, just without the details.
